“What Do You Do For a Living?” reimagines the future of retail by challenging the conventional understanding of labor in our society while placing a strong emphasis on valuing the worker and their wellbeing. This project recognises if a space is good for the worker, it will be good for the people.

The future of retail is one that can be adapted to diverse contexts and cater to the needs of different people, ultimately fostering economic and social growth. Central to this vision is the adoption of modularity as a strategic approach, enabling workers to have autonomy within the retail space to align with their specific requirements and brand values. By prioritising accessibility and inclusivity, this project aims to create an environment where individuals feel empowered.

This project integrates the concepts of rest, work, and display to create a comprehensive and enriching retail experience. It challenges the traditional hierarchical dynamics, aiming to establish a retail space where workers and customers coexist as equals. Emphasising the importance of rest, the project seeks to normalise recharging to enhance productivity and foster passion for work. Furthermore, the project places significant value on the workers’ knowledge, fostering meaningful interactions between them and customers to showcase their expertise and skills. By appreciating the worker’s vision, the project reimagines display as an exhibition, celebrating craftsmanship and inspiring customisation. ‘What Do You Do For a Living?’ seeks to redefine the future of retail by creating an environment that empowers workers, supports local creators, and encourages collaboration and knowledge exchange between artisans and customers. By valuing rest, knowledge, and vision, the project embodies the values of a conscious and collaborative retail experience, showcasing adaptability, sustainability, and the celebration of craftsmanship.
